I’m writing an article with the working title (deep breath) “What is the Sound of Houston?” In the piece, I consider several Houston-centric “sounds” one hears across musical genres, and what it is behind those sounds that makes music in the Bayou City and other rural and urban locations along the Gulf Coast so unique. As part of my research, I checked out an unreleased, archived interview with pianist and Houston native Jason Moran. (Artist and historian Tierney Malone conducted the interview as part of his multi-year exhibit, The Sankofa Project.)
